            I HAD A FIRE

Words & Music Copyright By Barry Feldman (ASCAP)

Oh I had a fire, it started off slow
With some matches and twigs and some dry leaves below
Fed it more and more sticks, built it higher and higher
Then fed more and more logs into that fire
And so happy was I that I did not tire

Leave it be, don’t feed it just leave it alone
Don’t you know it will grow on its own, leave it be
For just as long as you built it strong
It will live on and on
Don’t you see, just leave it be

As the flame climbed the sky, framed against the dark tree
It crackled with joy in its bright red glory
One day I strolled away and lay closing my eyes
Knew the heat of the coals would keep my fire alive

Leave it be, don’t feed it just leave it alone
Don’t you know it will grow on its own, leave it be
For just as long as you built it strong
It will live on and on
Don’t you see, just leave it be

Soon the hungry flame called me, threw it a twig or two
Starving it called me, threw it an I love you
As the curl of the flame begged and beckoned to me
I watched it get smaller but I didn’t see
Till one day it died and I...

Oh I had a fire, it started off slow
With some matches and twigs and some dry leaves below

Leave it be, don’t feed it just leave it alone
Don’t you know it will grow on its own, leave it be
For just as long as you built it strong
It will live on and on
Don’t you see, just leave it be
That’s what they all keep tellin me
