            THE FOUNTAIN (OF YOUTH)

Words & Music Copyright By Barry Feldman (ASCAP)

There’s a leak in the tower
There’s a crack in the reservoir
There’s a break in the system, a hole in the sea
And the fountain is going dry.

There’re innocent children, born to depression
Children of children, children predestined
To spill through the bottom, fill the dungeons and gutters
Who can invest to save the rest
And seal up the reservoir
For the fountain is going dry

We can do anything
Mobilize a whole nation
We’ve sent armies to jungles, we’ve immunized millions
Defeated the Nazis, rationed food, walked the moon --

There’s a leak in the system, doomed American youth
Let’s build armies of teachers, childcare helpers, tutors
One on one where needed, let’s just guarantee
To build each child’s strengths that soon they could help teach
Till all flow in the system
For the fountain is going dry

It takes more than lipservice
Or small budget increases
We need mass reinforcements to shore up the fountain
And a leader to lead them.

We must invest to prevent our decay
We can do it for profits, twenty years from today
For interest, or prizes, out of greed, out of fright
Or do it just because it’s right
There’s a crack in the reservoir
And the fountain is going dry
